.NET MAGAZINE SITE OF MONTH

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Excerpt from the article…

Interactive user experiences are all about capturing a fantasy or reality in the most convincing way. The challenge is often working out how to get the visitor so deep into the site that they lose any inhibitions. This site, created for jeans company JAG, throws you into the magazine and photography world and gives you the chance to create your own magazine with pictures that you take with a virtual camera. “The brief was to offer the user a fun and realistic fashion photo shoot experience, putting them in the photographer’s shoes and letting them choose the shots and layout,” explains Resn’s producer, Rik Campbell.

The site’s digital SLR, which you use to capture the stills, is central to the whole experience and was a real technical feat for Resn; the immediate responsiveness of the click and capture is a crucial aspect of the photography experience. “An initial working prototype enabled us to refine the speed of the real-time capture of screen shots from the Flash video, enabling us to create the feeling that the user is indeed taking the photo,” says Campbell. “The next challenge was to sync these lower res screen shots Flash-side with the server-side high res frames that would be used in the magazine and for the desktop download.”

It was necessary to create two versions of the model videos to achieve this, as well as using selective loading to pull down only those images the user needed. “Perhaps the greatest challenge was using Papervision 3D to deliver the customised magazine in a 3D viewer, which required a mix of ActionScript 2 and 3,” reveals Campbell.

3D Photo face

Fancy Flash 3D photo manipulation tool.  This takes our Luke Buda concept to new levels.  Developed at Oddcast this tool can do some pretty fantastically ugly things.  Upload your own face in 3D and insert your own talking message.  NOKIA recently launched an FWA winning site based on this.  Check them both out.
